App Store Optimization: A Hands-On Guide

Making an app is only a small part of the process. There are millions of apps in the app stores that have awesome functionality but no one knows about it. That’s because they haven’t been well marketed. As of March 2017, there are more than 2.8 million apps in Google Play and 2.2 million apps in the Apple App Store.

According to Forrester, 63% of apps are discovered through app store searches. This makes searches in the app store the most used method for discovering and downloading new apps. We’ll take you through the – one important strategy to getting tons of traffic – App Store Optimization. ASO is a process of optimizing mobile apps so that they rank higher in the app store search results.

Here are some of the ASO tactics to improve downloads and app ranking.

Step 1: Use a simplistic icon to make an impact

When users browse through the app store the first visual impression that they will have is the icon. For Android, don’t forget to check out Google’s Icon Design Guidelines and their Android Icon Templates Pack. For iOS, check out their app icon attributes.

Step 2: Choose the right app name

App name is the number 1 thing to focus on for app store optimization. The title should be a unique and compelling with a unique keyword. The length of your app name can be up to 30 characters on the App Store in iOS 11. Google Play Store has 50 character limit.

Step 3: Choose the right keyword words

Understand your target market and what keywords will be relevant to your audience. Try to maximize using long tail keywords that users will search for.

Step 4: Create a complete app description

Your full app description can be around 300 to 500 words.  An app description is actually more like a sales page than a description. No matter what, the features are always written from the end user’s perspective and how it would enrich their lives. At the end, include a strong call-to-action that entices users to actually download your app.

Step 5: Put the best screenshot forward

Don’t hesitate to write some explanations on your screenshots. If you don’t put the right screenshots ones, people won’t download your app.

Step 6: Add a video preview

People are more likely to view the videos and read the description.
